Linking to Messengers in profiles

I was experimenting with this on my zone profile. Since I have MSN Messenger, Aim and Yahoo. Yahoo and Aim can be linked but I'm unsure about MSN. What it does is, you have to be online. The person reaching you would have to go to your profile and tab until they hear the messenger column, and then tab and it'll say aim: tab then it'll speak out link: username. Hit enter and if both parties are on that messenger device, a IM window will open up with a welcome message. All the person has to do is hit enter and the message is sent to the other party. There are other options like viewing messenger profiles (for aim and yahoo) and adding screen names for all 3 devices. I was wondering if this would be a better and easier idea so that those who don't know html code can just add their screen names in the fields in editing profiles and then be able to go in and actually access them.

I think this is an awesome idea! Also, when the new options for searching profiles arrive, if there's a separate field for each messenger, it'll be easier to search for those with AIM, MSN, Yahoo, GCN, ICQ, etc etc.

Yup in fact on LJ you can IM directly from someone on their user info page. Or on my site's boards go to that person's profile and click on one to send a IM. It's very convienit.

yup once lj took away the code registration feature I was able to make 3 communities, a personal journal, and two website updates journal. On LJ on my s/n blindvi I posted my instant message info but I'm reluctant to do that on my personal journal as I'm unsure who'd IM me. So yeah in a sense it is a great feature to use. To just click on a messenger link and send someone a direct IM.

Hmmm, the reason we had one messenger field was because we didn't want to have to add 12. But maybe we should do this at least for the ones that you can link

hmm, this is interesting, I didn't know you could do this sort of linking. I do know html as well as php and Javascript. How does this work?

It works the same way you would link to a Ventrilo server, Skype, etc. I don't have the exact formin front of me but Google should help. Incidentally, anyone who knows PHP or at least some and wants to help coding the site, write me.

You can also make links for AIM to add a certain screen name.
